A great platform built for new beginnings

Gumroad is a leading e-commerce platform that allows creators to sell products
directly to their audience. Gumroad is used by creators and entrepreneurs
to setup their own landing pages and sell their products.

In Feb 2017 Sahil contacted BigBinary to allow creators to put in their
own Stripe and paypal accounts. In this way Gumroad would become a pure SaaS.


Working with Stripe was pretty straight forward. However working with Paypal was tricky. They had just released a new version of their software and it had some edge cases. The documentation was also not fully updated. We had to get on calls with paypal folks multiple times to sort things out.

Payment Integration

Besides the payment integrations BigBinary worked on a number of code
improvements and new features. Webpack was the new kid on the block but
it was gaining both popularity and maturity very quickly. We worked on
switching Gumroad from RequireJS to webpack. During this period we
published following two blogs which came out of our engagement with

All-in-one healthcare compliance software

In the old application, the data was buried under multiple clicks.
Compliance data needs to be front and center, so that is where we put it.
The new dashboard has all the information a compliance officer needs.
Each section has its own card, and each card is color-coded: green means
all is well, and red means it needs attention.


The challenge

The old document control center looked like a regular file system on a
laptop, and finding the right document was often confusing. The new
document control center brings everything into the dashboard, making it
easy to get to the right record.

The application is used on many different devices, so it had to be
fully responsive. We made sure it works well on every screen size and
resolution.

Reports are all about getting to the right data without too many clicks.
Whether you are looking for a week of data or a month, it is one click
away. Reports can be drilled down further by category and other risk
factors, and everything can be exported to Excel or CSV.

Lovewick is a free relationship app that helps couples feel even closer,

Ruby on Rails is a great fit for an application like this, and it suits building iteratively. At first the application was deliberately light on features while we found out what users valued most. As it matured, we added a couples card game, a date night planner, relationship reminders, wishlists and a relationship tracker.

Building the web application

Since most people use Lovewick on their phones, the mobile app had to be sleek and get the job done. We built it with React Native, and it went to plan: we could add features and fix bugs very quickly.

Building a relationship application means that the application should be
fast and not cluttered. The design should be just right, and most
importantly, it should be fun.

Early on, we were not sure what would click with customers, so we decided
to build Lovewick iteratively: get features into customers' hands as soon
as possible, then improve on them.

numberF is a startup from Washington DC that is changing how digital art
is discovered, distributed and consumed. Dadi Akhavan, the founder of
numberF, is an avid art lover who wanted ordinary TVs to stream digital
art. He built numberF to be the Netflix of the digital art world, where
art lovers can watch digital art through a simple subscription.


The concept is simple. Up-and-coming artists upload their videos to the
platform, and users pick the videos they like to build a collection of
their favorites.

The collection then plays the way you want it to. Whether you are
hosting a party or want to sit back and enjoy the art, the experience
adapts to you.

To stop videos from freezing while they buffer, BigBinary built an adaptive bitrate streaming system for numberF.

We built the web application with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL. Videos play with HTML5, and we used Zencoder for video encoding.

Developing the web application

We built numberF's mobile application with React Native. Because React
Native is cross-platform, numberF did not need to build and maintain two
separate apps in Objective-C/Swift and Java.

The app was built quickly in React Native, then launched to users on
both iOS and Android.

for many. numberF is trying to break the mold and bring art to everyone.

While designing the whole user experience, BigBinary kept things extremely
simple. Users start with a preselected set of featured videos, and then
choose their preferred channels.

Track, analyze and share your racing on any device

RaceHero brings everything about racing to your pocket in a fun, social
way. Race schedules, live timing, tracking and analyzing the data: it can
all be done in RaceHero.


RaceHero covers live races, showing and updating each racer's position
in real time. Dive into the data for completed laps with just a few
clicks, and tap a racer's profile to follow them and find out more.


Live races

RaceHero generates charts for each race that help explain what actually
happened. Lap time and position charts look beyond the finishing order
and show how each racer attacked and defended to earn their place.


Visualizing the race

Beyond live races, users can look at the statistics of finished races.
The app shows each racer's lap-by-lap performance and key stats such as
best lap time, time behind the winner and positions gained. Trophy icons
highlight extra analytics like Hard Charger, Fast Rabbit and Flag to Flag
Victory, and users can share these results on social media with a tap.

The schedule helps users keep track of upcoming races, the participants
and their past performances.


Results and schedule

When RaceHero approached BigBinary to build the mobile application, the
MVP of their web application was already up and running. They wanted the
mobile application live quickly. Most importantly, once it was live, they
wanted an easy way to update the product without constantly pushing
updates to the app stores.

The RaceHero web application had a responsive design and already looked
great in a mobile browser. Our task was to reuse and update the HTML pages
already built, so that a change to a page did not need the same change in
the mobile app.
